Key Tracking Factors & Rationale:

Digger (October 2 / Warner Bros.)

  • Digger is one of the more challenging films of this fall to track, particularly in the (pre-)pre-sale window. There’s no question that industry and cinephile anticipation is high for both Tom Cruise’s return to original major studio fare, as well as director Alejandro González Iñárritu’s first wide theatrical feature since The Revenant.

  • Buzz around Cruise’s performance has been on fire since CinemaCon debuted extensive footage from the film, stirring speculation it could be the cinema champion’s long overdue shot at a Best Actor Oscar this coming award season.

  • Still, as seen with last year’s One Battle After Another, casual audience appetites for unique prestige fare translates at the box office a little differently in the mid-2020s than it did pre-pandemic.

  • The range of possible outcomes here, especially with word of mouth and the comedic aspects factored in, should be considered highly volatile for now.

Verity (October 2 / Amazon MGM)

  • Anne Hathaway is in the midst of a banner career year following The Odyssey, The Devil Wears Prada 2, The End of Oak Street, and Mother Mary. On top of that, her recent casting alongside Tom Cruise in 2028’s Days of Thunder sequel could create a unique synergy for the two actors’ head-to-head openings of wildly different movies.

  • Fans of the source material and author Colleen Hoover are sure to support her latest cinematic adaptation. The mysterious thriller narrative is well timed for the weeks leading up to Halloween.

  • With that in mind, and considering Cruise’s own notable drawing power among Gen X and millennial women, there could be some crossover audience share even if Digger proves to more male-driven. The two films could ultimately co-exist in the long run.

Other Mommy (October 9 / Universal)

  • Universal and Blumhouse are no strangers to developing original horror hits, with the latter production studio fresh off recent hits Obsession, Backrooms, Insidious: Out of the Further, Five Nights at Freddy’s 2, and Black Phone 2 (among others).
