Key Tracking Factors & Rationale:

  • Street Fighter joins our public forecast in the 5-week view for subscribers this week as Paramount hopes to bring the retro video game IP to a new generation of fans. Preliminary tracking shows interest is highest among male audiences (natch), leaning slightly more toward Millennials and Gen X but with some potential upside among Gen Z.

    • Similar to the Mortal Kombat series, Capcom has kept Street Fighter in the modern gamer consciousness with recent entries in the franchise (the latest coming in 2023). Unlike the MK films, however, Street Fighter‘s latest cinematic adaptation (the first was a moderately performing mid-1990s star vehicle lead by Jean-Claude Van Damme and Raul Julia) will opt for a PG-13 rating that expands potential moviegoing for teenagers.

    • With a cast of relative unknowns, but a mid-fall slate that doesn’t provide copious amounts of competition, current analogs in trailer, eventual pre-sale, and the full tracking universe include the aforementioned MKII and Masters of the Universe.

  • Other updates:

    • Preliminary forecasts for Whalefall are also included in the five-week outlook. The high-concept thriller could be a sleeper candidate as we monitor signals closer to release. Trailer reactions have been enthusiastic dating back to its debut at CinemaCon earlier this year.

    • Closer to the frontlines, Resident Evil remains in a strong position one week out from release. Our opening weekend pinpoint reduction is mostly a function of refining model weights rather than any concerning signals.

    • On the weekend of September 25, Avengers Endgame: Encore remains the frontrunner but a blend of counter-programming potential aids Heart of the Beast and Forgotten Island, while Primetime is seeing a beneficial wave of buzz from external media coverage on top of inherent metro market appeal.
